In recent years, numerous innovative reactor projects have emerged, driven by the urgent need
for decarbonization and the rising global energy demand. Small Modular Reactors are poised to
address these challenges in a scalable and cost-effective manner.

This presentation will begin by introducing various SMR technologies, highlighting their underlying physics principles and assessing their technology readiness levels. The discussion will then narrow down to European and French projects, emphasizing those supported by both public and private initiatives.

Among the diverse range of projects, some SMR designs prioritize heat supply for industrial
process heat applications and residential heating over electricity generation. These thermal
projects frequently utilize a well-established design known as the High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor (HTGR). The presentation will conclude with a detailed exploration of the history of HTGRs and an overview of current projects in development.
