Welcome to MASTER
« Microwave Amplification by Spin Transfer Emission Radiation »
Written by Olivier KLEIN Tuesday, 17 February 2009
MASTER is a European Research Project that addresses the physics and technology of the next generation of spin transfer oscillators. Six European research groups, theoretical and experimental, from academia, semi-governmental institutes and industry, collaborate to meet this challenge.
MASTER is a collaborative project financed in 2007 under the call Nanosciences, nanotechnologies, materials & new production technologies (NMP)
MASTER participants:
- Commissariat à l’Énergie Atomique (CEA) – Saclay
-
Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique
- University of Münster
- University of Exeter
- Université Catholique de Louvain
- Istituto P. M.
Objectives:
MASTER is a collaborative project funded by the FP7-NMP (Nanosciences, Nanotechnologies, Materials and new Production Technologies Call), whose objectif is to explore the potential of Spin-Transfer Oscillators (STO) for use as tunable and ultra-narrow band microwave radiation sources for mobile and wireless telecommunication technology. The STO is a nano-structured magnetic multilayers, compatible with monolithic on-board integration, driven by a spin-polarized electrical current, and emitting microwave radiation. The proposal specifically addresses the bottleneck issue of the power conversion efficiency of STO, between the continuous driving current and the microwave radiation that is emitted. By taking advantage of the phase-locking effect between coupled nano-oscillators one can dramatically increase the generated microwave power and, at the same time, reduce its linewidth. The challenge is to overcome the unavoidable distribution of STO characteristics during the nano-fabrication process. Since individual biasing of each nano-oscillator is impractical for large N, we propose instead to enhance the strength of the coherent coupling between the elements.

We have an opening for a postdoctoral position in the group of Luc Piraux in the laboratory PCPM at the Université Catholique de Louvain (Bruxelles area). The position is for two years beginning in June 2010. Deadline for application is March 1st 2010. We are looking for a candidates with a PhD in experimental condensed matter physics, preferably with a focus on spintronic or nanoscience. The funding scheme will be the Marcel de Merre Prize, which covers a salary of 30k€ net per year. The candidate will conduct his research within the European project « MASTER » on the problematic of spin transfer effects in potential spintronic devices. Applications together with letters of recommendation should be sent by email to luc.piraux at uclouvain.be
