I will explain why we should, and in particular how we can, go beyond the simple calculation of a roughness exponent, when trying to characterize the structure and the dynamics of a crack front. First, I will show that a Gaussian statistics provides a complete statistical description of the morphology of crack surfaces in brittle materials. And then, I will describe how we fully characterized the intermittent dynamics of an interfacial crack front.
