In this talk I will focus on two classical, seemingly disconnected problems in fluid mechanics. The first one is the classical problem of subcritical transition in channel flow. The other problem is the modeling of the viscous dissipation rate of kinetic energy as a function of large-scale quantities. We will show that, rather surprisingly, the correct modeling of the dissipation rate in isotropic turbulence allows to get a handle on the description of subcritical transition in plane Poiseuille flow.
