Solid-state NMR is a powerful tool to probe the electrochemical and chemical phenomena occurring inside batteries. Yet, conventional in situ setups able to acquire NMR spectra inside a battery cell suffer from broad, poorly resolved spectra. Magic-Angle Spinning (MAS) is a NMR technique that can sharpen these signals dramatically. It implies spinning the sample at high speed — but, obviously, spinning a working battery cell inside an NMR magnet is extremely difficult, since the battery cell must stay intact, airtight while rotating at thousands of times per second and allows for electrical connections either inside or outside the NMR magnet.
The ANR-funded SPINBATT project has recently built a metal-free, carbon-based battery cell that is electrochemically viable and that spins steadily. This first proof of concept opens now the door to in situ MAS NMR measurements on different battery chemistries, that will combine the signal resolution of MAS with realistic battery cycling.
Internship objectives: Alongside a PhD student, the intern will have the following tasks in the project:
- Finalize the spinning parameters of the cell to reach full speed inside the NMR probe
- Run in situ ⁷Li NMR experiments on the cell during battery cycling, studying conventional Li-ion chemistries and comparing results with existing static NMR studies.
