Neutron scattering in Europe is entering a period of major transition, marked by a significant reduction in experimental capacity and the emergence of new concepts for neutron facilities aimed at addressing this evolving landscape. Maintaining both cutting-edge capabilities and sufficient access for a broad scientific, industrial and training community require a diversified and resilient neutron landscape.
ICONE (Innovative COmpact NEutron Facility) is the French project for a new High-Current Accelerator-driven Neutron Source (HiCANS), jointly developed by CEA and CNRS. Based on a 25 MeV, 80 mA proton accelerator, ICONE will combine compactness, modularity and high-performance pulsed neutron production. Two target stations will provide complementary time structures: a High-Flux mode using long pulses and a High-Resolution mode based on shorter pulses.
The complete facility will host ten scientific instruments and two development lines, distributed between the two experimental halls and covering diffraction, small-angle scattering, reflectometry, spectroscopy, imaging and neutron activation analysis. This broad instrumental suite is designed to provide both advanced capabilities and substantial experimental capacity.
The presentation will discuss the scientific and technological concept of ICONE and its role, together with other European HiCANS initiatives such as HBS and ARGITU, in complementing flagship facilities such as ESS and ILL and contributing to a more distributed, flexible and sustainable European neutron ecosystem.
