ESS is unusual, in that it is a major scientific infrastructure that has not yet started operation, but has already been the subject of several articles, and even books. The starting point for all of these tends to be around the late 2000s, however the first ESS project meetings were actually held as far back as 1991/92.
The full story needs to include the history of neutron scattering in Europe, which led to the ESS concept and the discussions that eventually resulted in Lund being the location of the ESS facility.
Importantly, this story needs to be told while those who were there can still remember the details.
