Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (quantum dots) represent exciting new functionalized semiconductor materials. New, often unexpected, physical ideas have emerged from recent investigations of these materials. The preparation, surface passivation, characterization, and properties of CdSe, PbS, and EuS will be described. An overview of the application of ultrafast photon echo pulse sequences for systematically revealing relationships between structure and optical properties will be presented.
