Domain, Specialties : CHEMISTRY
Keywords: Materials chemistry
Research Unit : NIMBE / LIONS
Summary
The internship proposed here involves the experimental study of new digitally-designed, locally isotropic, multi-domain, 2D-architecture microtrellis metamaterials. The trainee will participate in the design, manufacture by 3D printing (photopolymerization) and study of the mechanical performance in compression of these new metamaterials. A good knowledge of mechanics will be highly appreciated, as will an aptitude for experimental work.
Full description
Reducing the density of materials is one way of reducing our energy footprint. In this context, two teams at CEA Saclay have been developing new architectures that are inspired by the bone structure of birds. These are micro-lattice whose architecture is random, making it possible to create new classes of mechanically isotropic metamaterials that are ultra-light yet resistant to fracture.
Thanks to the experience acquired, new multi-domain metamaterials of the brick and mortar type are now being proposed as part of a larger project. The M2 subject proposed here will involve carrying out experimental mechanical studies on 2-dimensional materials designed digitally and then 3D printed by photopolymerization. More specifically, the intern will be involved in the design, manufacture and mechanical performance studies of these new metamaterials. He/she will be in charge of fabricating and studying the materials in compression on a dedicated device, imaging the displacement field in the samples, then analyzing the data obtained to extract the compressive strength and its variation with density, disorder and spatial distribution of the different zones.
This highly interdisciplinary job, at the interface between physics, chemistry and mechanics, requires a taste for teamwork. A good knowledge of mechanics will be highly appreciated, as well as an aptitude for experimental work. The trainee will interact with two teams and be part of a project involving several young researchers. He/she will benefit from the ecosystem developed around this ground-breaking project. The internship will last 6 months.
