Founded in 2008, CIMAP is a research laboratory focused on two main themes: excited matter and defects, on the one hand, and materials and optics, on the other. The wide range of disciplines represented at CIMAP stems from its long tradition of structuring physics research in Lower Normandy and nationwide.

Its organizational role is also present through the CIRIL platform, the EMIR research federation on materials irradiation, and the IRMA research federation on materials.

CIMAP is administratively bound to four partner institutions. It is located on three sites: part of the laboratory is housed by the École Nationale Supérieure d’Ingénieurs de Caen (ENSICAEN), part is located on the GANIL (Grand Accélérateur National d’Ions Lourds) campus, and the last site is on the IUT d’Alençon campus. CIMAP is a CNRS research unit (UMR 6252) linked to the Institute of Physics (INP, primary) and the Institute of Chemistry (INC, secondary). It is also a CEA unit linked to the Fundamental Research Directorate (DRF) through the Saclay Institute for Radiation and Matter (IRAMIS). Finally, CIMAP is linked to the University of Caen (UNICAEN) and ENSICAEN, which gives it a strong involvement in higher education.

The “Center of Research on Ions Materials and Photonics” (CIMAP) at GANIL (National Large Accelerator of Heavy Ions) is a division joining the former CIRIL and SIFCOM laboratories.
CIMAP is a joint Laboratory between CEA, CNRS, the Caen High Scool of Engineering (ENSICaen) and the Caen University.

Ion-matter interaction and materials for LASER applications are its main research programs.
