Science des matériaux et chimie pour l'archéologie et le patrimoine / Material science and chemistry for archaeology and cultural heritage

Schematic drawing of the microscopic metallographic observation showing the carbon distribution within the metallic matrix in a Gallo-Roman ingot of the Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer (France). Calibrated age obtained through the radiocarbon dating of the iron of the ingot.

Au delà des études visant à mieux comprendre et prédire l'altération des métaux anciens, l'équipe du LAPA utilise la science des matériaux et les méthodes de la chimie pour comprendre certains aspects des sociétés antiques en lien avec leur niveau technologique.

Ceci, selon trois axes principaux :

  1.  Comprendre la manufacture des objets métalliques et son organisation dans les sociétés anciennes
  2.   Déterminer la provenance des objets métalliques anciens
  3.   Dater les objets archéologiques

In addition to studies aiming to better understand and predict the alteration of ancient metals, the LAPA team uses materials science and chemistry methods to understand aspects of ancient societies linked with their technological levels.

Three main axes are followed:

  1. Understanding of the organization of the manufacture and metallic artifacts in ancient societies
  2. Determining the provenance of ancient metallic artifact
  3. Dating archaeological artifacts
