Research Topics
The research topics of the nuclear microprobe team are centered on transport and diffusion of light elements in materials, studied by means of ion beam based microanalysis techniques.
My present main topic is related to innovative protonic conducting ceramic materials for fuel cells or steam electrolyzers working at intermediate temperatures (400-700 °C). For electrolyte membranes, the most promising (and most studied !) candidate to be used are oxides with perovskite structure (e.g. in BaCeYO system). The challenge is to fully understand the mechanisms of hydrogen transport to achieve enhanced protonic conductance. From literature data, it appears that microstructure induced limitations of hydrogen transport have not been adequately addressed yet, mainly because of the lack of quantitative methods for local hydrogen concentration measurement. With the nuclear microprobe, we are able to evidence directly diffusion pathways and acquire local transport parameters. Besides, materials with Mixed Ionic and Electronic Conduction (MIEC) could be used as electrodes, fuel cell cathodes (e.g. Rare earth nickelates such as Pr2NiO4) or anodes for water vapor electrolysis (e.g. alkaline and rare earth cobaltites such as Sr0.5La0.5CoO3 et NdBaCo2O5 ). Although a minor charge carrier in this case, possible hydrogen mobility opens the possibility to relocate some interface reactions, an advantage for kinetics improvement or/and for the management of water produced at this electrode.
A key point to succeed in those investigations is to bring together microstructure design, nanoscale defects characterization and local investigations on hydrogen transport within microstructure. This can be achieved only in the frame of collaborations which gather complementary skills (solid chemistry, solid physics, TEM characterization, hydrogen spectroscopy, etc…). This have been done both in the frame of international collaborations (EOARD funded with NASA-GRC/Cleveland, University of Sevilla, ENSMP) and of French collaborative research (ANR/PAN-H program, TECTONIC project) or even within open access experiments on our facility (CEA-LITEN/Grenoble, ICMCB/Bordeaux). For the purpose of those projects, we have developed a new method of 3D hydrogen microscopy based on forward coincident scattering of protons which has revealed presence of hydrogen trapped in grain boundaries of melt-grown ceramics. Thanks to founding got from Triangle de la Physique (SPECELOB project) and from Ile-de-France region (OXYMORE), our goal is now to enhance the capabilities of this method, based on a very large solid angle detection and fast data acquisition system which could improve sensitivity at least of two orders of magnitude.
My former center of interest was related to relationships between high temperature metallic oxidation (Nickel, Zirconium/Zircaloy, Iron/Steel) and applied mechanical loads (research agreement with University of Technology of Compiène / Laboratoire Roberval). Mechanisms of growth of oxide scales, especially diffusion of oxygen, can be studied by 18O tracing and nuclear reaction microanalysis (18O(p,a)15N nuclear reaction). True synergetic effects have been evidenced in the case of creep of monocrystalline nickel. Not only oxide growth is « activated » by external mechanical loading (correlation between oxygen diffusion coefficients and the relaxable energy of the applied load) but also creep behavior is modified by a thin growing oxide. This field still continues to attract me, with a few investigations dealing with the role of water vapor (dramatic modifications of plasticity of iron oxide scales, for instance).
In the frame of the use of the nuclear microprobe, collaborations with partner teams have led me to study light elements behavior in various materials such as for example lithium intercalated in graphite based ternary compounds (collab. Institut Jean Lamour / Nancy) or in LLTO pH sensors (collab. Université du Maine / Le Mans), nitrogen, oxygen and carbon incorporated into titanium surface under laser impact (collab. Institut Carnot de Bourgogne / Chalon-Dijon), oxygen-18 isotopic tracing of long term corrosion mechanisms of ancient metals (collab. LAPA / Saclay), or helium distribution in nuclear materials (collab. CEA / Saclay).

Hobbies
I have been an early member (1976) of the French association AJECTA(www.ajecta.fr) devoted to preservation and restoration of steam locomotives and vintage carriages at the engine shed of Longueville (Seine et Marne, near Paris).
In this frame, I used to drive steam engines on Paris region main lines. I am still an active member of the association board.
In a completely different area, I also play classical piano and have turned later towards pipe organ. Old or rebuilt organs are artworks which may be compared to paintings. They are manifold, depending on the region and the time period they were built. They are above all the signature of inspired organ makers. Following are some sequences recorded in the past years on magnificent instruments (concerts, rehearsals, summer schools or visits):
The Manufacture Muhleisen, not far from Strasbourg, has built organs for more than 70 years. His crafstmen team has been elected “Meilleurs ouvriers de France” (Best Workers in France) in 2000 with the creation of a new, modern organ, in the French style at Bad Gandersheim (Northern Germany). Here are two examples of their German style instruments:
* Paris / Temple des Billettes. This organ, built in 1983, is basically German baroque style (18th century) but almost “neoclassical” which enables to play German romantic (Mendelsohnn, Bramhs) and contemporary music.
– J.S. Bach : Wir Glauben et Vater Unser BWV 681-682
– S. Scheidt: Allein Gott in der Höh sei Her
* Douai / Eglise Ste Marie. Compared to Billettes organ, this one is slightly closer to French baroque style (18th century), but the ambiance at the gallery with brick walls and large clear windows is typically North German.
– D. Buxtehude: Nun freut euch, lieben Christen g’mein, BuxWV 210 (excerpt)
Alfred Kern was a great organ maker inspired by 18th century instruments such those from Silbermann or Cliquot families. In the fifties, whereas the general trends were to design “modern” instruments with a large use of pneumatic or electro-mechanical assistance, he has been a pioneer of the renewal of fully mechanical keyboards which allows much more precise and dynamic control of playing.
* Thionville / St Maximin cathedral. This organ was unveiled in 1792, built by Georges Dondaine from parts coming from a previous instrument built in 1765 by Dondaine himself and from another one built in 1737 by Le Picard and bought by Thionville town council. After several transformations in 19th and 20th centuries which have modified the organ into a romantic aesthetics, a full restoration has been performed in 1969 by Alfred Kern to recover its original aesthetics, a synthesis of French and North German classic style. The organ of St Maximin is considered as one of its masterworks and among the most beautiful in Europe.
– J.S. Bach : Vater Unser BWV 682
In the middle of the 19th century, most organs were built or transformed according to the so-called “Romantic” aesthetics from which derives the concept of “symphonic organ” which considers an organ as an image of a symphonic orchestra. Aristide Cavaillé-Coll is the best known builder for his world-famous instruments (such as Rouen / St Ouen), but, Joseph Merklin, its principal competitor, had also a considerable influence on the evolution of the instrument.
* Douai / St Pierre cathedral. This organ was built by Mutin, Cavaille-Coll successor, just before the first world war. It was a command for the concert hall of the imperial conservatory of St Petersburg, but never delivered because of the Russian revolution… Installed in Douai in 1920, this organ may be considered as a late symphonic organ.
– Louis Vierne : Stèle opus 58 (excerpt)
* Epinay / St Leu church (no picture available). A small Merklin organ built in 1868, but in its full original shape. At that time, people were very fond of “light music” and church music sounded like in light opera.
– Louis-James-Alfred Lefebure-Wely: mib “Sortie”
French Baroque organs are characterized by their large proportion of reed stops, often with bright sounds (such as trumpets, bombarde and crumhorns), but showing a rather immutable composition with the same sound and keyboards disposition. Under the rule of Louis XIV, organists have composed in the same manner for the same instruments for several tens of years… Until the French revolution, organs remained nearly the same since the beginning of the 18th century.
* Alès / Cathedral. A magnificent instrument built by Lepine in 1782 and restored by Alain Sals in 1973 according to its original state.
– Louis-Claude Daquin : Noël sur l’air de « La Nonette » (excerpt)
