Functionalization and assembly of gold nanoparticles for plasmonics and health

Full description:
Our activity is focused on the synthesis and self-assembly of high quality gold nanoparticles for plasmonics, plasmon-driven chemistry and health. It is linked to the activities of two CNRS research groups, the GDRs Or-nano and Plasmonique active. The properties of gold nanohybrids, consisting of a gold nanoparticle and another component which can be either a molecule/ a semiconductor/ a Qdot, or a catalyst are studied in collaboration with expert teams through funded collaborations (ANR).

We have been developing for several years a know-how in colloidal synthesis of gold nanoparticles whose sizes/shapes and chemical coatings are optimized to generate light, heat or charge carriers, depending on the targeted application. The electromagnetic hot spots between gold nanocubes, organized in a two-dimensional (2D) array on a substrate, present unique high potential interstices ("nanogaps"), capable of exalting the light-matter interaction and generating electron-hole pairs ("hot carriers") in a very intense and highly localized manner. Moreover, gold nanoparticles are widely used for health in therapy/imaging/diagnosis. For these applications, it is often necessary to change the coating of the nanoparticles to render them biocompatible and/or functionalize them.

The internship will take place in the Laboratory EDifices NAnométriques (LEDNA) of CEA Paris-Saclay. It will consist in developing a 2D self-assembly know-how of gold nanoparticles at the interface between two liquids. In a second part, it will consist in coating them with a silica layer whose thickness and porosity can be modulated at will (sol-gel chemistry).
