The electrodeposition is widely applied in industry to recover metals from waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). The main objective of this research internship is to demonstrate a viable electrochemical approach to recover metals in a non-aqueous environment.

E-waste recycling has lately attracted more attention due to the presence of precious and strategic metals, in a context where the lack of natural mineral resources has been growing. Metal recovery from e-waste has therefore become a priority over metal mining.
Following the collection, sorting and physical or/and chemical treatments, the metals from e-waste are in their cationic forms. During a liquid-liquid extraction process, the metallic cations are complexed with chelating molecules, which were prior synthetized.
Electrochemical methods such as electrodeposition or electroplating have been extensively used in the metal recovery industry. Electrodeposition is a well-established technology to produce metallic coatings on conducting surface using an applied current.
The aim of this internship is to help to establish an approach allowing the recovery of desired metals using electrochemical methods (reduction). The recovery of the chelating molecules is also a priority, due to the intention of using them again.
For this internship, we are looking for a motivated and rigorous student completing their last year of Master, who has a solid background in electrochemistry. Ideally, the student should also have knowledge of chemical engineering (liquid-liquid extraction). The subject is part of an international scientific project between France and Singapore, therefore an excellent level of English is required.
