Ultra-sensitive tunnel magneto-resistance sensors for medical imaging

Summary:
The goal of the internship is to develop, fabricate and test very high sensitivity magnetic sensors co-integrating a superconductor and a spintronic element. The targeted application is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at low magnetic field (10mT).

Full description:
Our laboratory has developed a device called mixed sensor, combining a superconducting pick up loop with a giant magnetoresistance (or GMR) sensor for the measurement of extremely small magnetic signals (a few femtoteslas = 10^-15T), such as those produced by the heart or the brain. We have shown that this type of device can detect magnetic signals due to cardiac electrical activity. This type of sensor can also be very interesting for the measurement of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) signals.

The magneto-resistive element used so far is a metallic GMR of the spin valve type. Recent progress in the field of spin electronics has made it possible to propose tunnel magnetoresistors (TMR) whose performances are increased especially at high frequency. The study and understanding of the noise, especially at low temperature, of these structures is a key issue for the further development of ultra-sensitive devices.

The goal of the internship is to study low temperature TMR systems through magneto-transport and noise measurements, and then to integrate them into mixed sensor devices. These mixed sensors will be deployed for MRI in the framework of the ANR VLFMRI project.
