Let's scatter neutrons

Best wishes and perspectives 2013 with the LLB

Dear colleague and users of the LLB,

On the occasion of the new year, on behalf of all members of the Laboratoire Léon Brillouin, we would like to wish you our best wishes of health and success for the new year 2013. We hope it will bring you all neutrons you need.

The year 2012 was marked by significant renovations made to ensure the future of our infrastructure (new cold sources, new beam plug, beginning of the construction of the new spectrometer PA20, start of the new 7C2 ....). As a consequence, only 140 beam days were available this year. We will continue our work of renovation in 2014 and after, with the construction of other new spectrometers.

However, in 2013, we will go back to more than 180 beam days to meet your needs and help you achieve your research. In order to help you during the shutdown of the ILL and to facilitate the programming of your neutron scattering experiments, we have decided to change the date of our call for proposals, and put them one month earlier than usual; submission dates will now be April 1st and October 1st.

Moreover, in 2013, the research performed at the LLB, large scale infrastructure, will be once again evaluated by the AERES. We have to prepare this evaluation with you.We will ask you to suggest some highlights from your experiments performed at the LLB. Edited in our report, they are the witnesses of the excellence of the research that you performed with our instruments. Publications or thesis defended with these results over the past 2 years are crucial elements of our report. A good evaluation will insure us and you, to have the necessary support to maintain our instrumental capacity at the best level.

Looking further in the future, we have to prepare the use of the ESS. The LLB has been designated to coordinate the efforts of the French scientific community. We have already started to do some proposals that we would like to share with you. We invite you to participate in these projects, and elaborate your own propositions. This will ensure us the access to the best neutron scattering instruments for the next fifty years.

Surfing on these challenging projects, we wish you a good new year 2013, and will be happy to welcome you soon at the LLB.

On behalf of the LLB
