Solid-state lithium batteries offer the most desirable characteristics such as safety and higher energy densities for mobile and EV pack battery systems. All ceramic solid-state batteries consist of a composite cathode and solid electrolyte, densified by co-sintering and stacked with metallic lithium anode or silicon anode.[1] In this study, we selected NASICON based Li3V2(PO4)3 (LVP) active material for the electrochemical experiments in solid-state battery configuration. [2] NASICON solid electrolyte materials have been reported as a better cathode additive because of its high voltage stability and compatibility with a variety of cathode materials including NMC. [3] Since, both the cathode and solid electrolyte are from the NASICON family of materials, we expect better interfacial and electrochemical properties during cycling at 3.8 V. Initially, LVP cathode material will be synthesized by sol-gel and solid-state method. Physical characterizations including XRD, Raman spectrometry and SEM will be performed on the as synthesized materials followed by electrochemical characterizations such as cycling and EIS analysis. Initial electrochemical performance of LVP will be done in liquid electrolyte based lithium-ion batteries. In the final step, optimized LVP will be combined with NASICON electrolyte to explore the solid-state battery performance.

In general, the following tasks will be tackled:
• Synthesis of NASICON Li3V2(PO4)3 cathode material with carbon coating
• Electrochemical performance evaluation of cells
• Exploratory studies on the NASICON solid-state battery

Techniques used: Electrochemical performance tests (galvanostatic cycling, impedance, rate capability, and long-term cycling) in various electrochemical setups (coin cells, Swagelok and EL cells).
