The main achievement of the ESS concept is that it produces order or orders of magnitude more neutrons than other facility approaches of the same costs to build and operate. This is achieved by a combination of a variety of features and parameter choices. These includes optimizing the (energy) costs of fast neutron production, efficiency of the neutron slowing down, time structure of the pulsed neutron production, the slowing down time of the fast neutrons in the moderator-reflector system, choice of moderator, pre-moderator and reflector geometry, number of beamlines per target station, close range beam extraction, shutter design, delivered beam spectrum in one beamline and in particular the novel feature of directional slow neutron emission by quasi low dimensional moderator shape.
