Organic electronics is a field of research dealing with the development of new technologies based on organic semiconductor materials (OSCs). Two approaches can be used for the molecular design of OSCs. The first approach consists in assembling known efficient molecular fragments, in order to synthesize functional materials for a specific application. The second approach is riskier since it aims to develop new molecular fragments which may have one or several desired properties for a given application.
In this presentation, I will present results for which both approaches have been considered to design 3D materials that are of high potential for charge transport in organic electronics. Charge transport is a central notion in organic electronics as it is known that the performances of devices highly relies on this feature. I will present the optimized syntheses of materials that possess a donor-spiro-acceptor molecular design (first approach) and a nanohoop shape design (second approach). I will present in details the photophysical, electrochemical and thermal properties of all materials and their applications in organic field effect transistor and organic light emitting diode. More specifically, I will show with structure/properties/device performance relationship studies how fine modifications of the molecular backbone can drastically change the device performances and how with this understanding it is possible to reach very high device performances. I will notably present the best performance host matrices in single layer phosphorescent OLED of the literature1,2 and the first incorporation of nanohoop in organic electronics (OFET and OLED).3,4
