Laboratoire de Radiolyse

Access: located on the Saclay site of the Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique (CEA), 20 km south of Paris, France : map (pdf), how to come (pdf).

ALIENOR is the main experimental platform of the Laboratoire de Radiolyse. It is a linear accelerator delivering nanosecond to microsecond pulses of 10 MeV electron beam with a repetition rate up to 100 Hz. ALIENOR is a world-class research infrastructure providing state-of-the-art nanosecond to microsecond pulse radiolysis experimental setups, such as UV-visible-NIR transient absorption and fluorescence spectrometers, high-pressure/high temperature flow cell devoted to liquid and supercritical water studies, in line FT-IR spectrophotometer and high throughput spectroscopy (see activity report).

The Laboratoire de Radiolyse with the use of ALIENOR develops research activities in the following areas: primary events, interfaces and confined media, extreme pressure and temperature conditions and radiation biochemistry. Concerning the primary events, the Laboratoire de Radiolyse focuses especially on understanding the influence of parameters such as temperature, pressure, the role of the H-bond network and the linear energy transfer (LET) of the ionising particles. The Laboratoire is also developping new approaches to understand the radiolysis of water in nanoporous media and at interfaces. The development of FT-IR spectroscopy is connected to this field. The Laboratoire de Radiolyse studies effects of pressure and temperature in water radiolysis, especially in supercritical water. In the radiation biochemistry, the molecular mechanisms inside the living cell remains difficult to understand and are investigated. Water radiolysis is then used to mimic the toxicity conditions.

The characteristics of ALIENOR together with the conditions are given in the Table below.
