MAGENTA - "MAGnetic Nanoparticle Based Liquid Energies for Thermoelectric Devices Applications" is a new 4 years (2017-2020) H2020 "Future and Emerging technologies - FET Proactive" R & D project (5 M€), under the coordination of Sawako Nakamae of CEA-IRAMIS/SPEC. The project is supported by a collaboration of French, Italian, Greek, Swiss, Polish and British laboratories.

It proposes a new technological path in thermoelectric materials research for waste heat recovery applications. It is based on the newly discovered thermal-to-electric energy conversion capability of ionic-liquids and ferrofluids, under the form of colloidal dispersions of magnetic nanoparticles in ionic liquids (IL-FFs). These thermoelectric materials are versatile, cost effective and non-toxic, and will contribute to make the transition sustainable and economically sustainable in Europe. The lead-user industries targeted by MAGENTA are automobile and microelectronic sectors, but demonstration-type thermoelectric generators will also be produced for public outreach actions on waste-heat recovery technologies.
