Transitions in out-of-equilibrium systems

This internship aims at studying transitions between non-equilibrium steady states, from an experimental point of view. The experiment will be the von Karman experiment, a vessel filled with water, in which spontaneous and forced bifurcations of the mean flow topology have been observed. The goal is to understand the conditions in which these transitions take place, and, if possible, establish a link with recent progress in theory of out-equilibrium systems, to generalize normal thermodynamics. The final aim is to understand whether such transitions take place in climate, and whether we would be even more concern with climate change taking place under the shape of tipping point and brutal transitions.
