Denis Vion

Experimental Physicist in Quantum Electronics

CV / Short bio

Denis Vion is currently senior physicist in the quantum electronics (Quantronics) group of the French atomic energy commission (CEA), in Saclay (France). He received his PhD in 1992 from Lyon University for his work at CERN on the residual resistivity of niobium-coated superconducting cavities for particle acceleration. Then he was post-doc (1993-1996) in the Quantronics group, where he worked on Single Cooper pair boxes and Single Cooper pair transistors. In 1996-1997, he was teacher in chemistry and physics in several high schools. Then, he managed during two years the reliability group of Pixtech, a company involved in the development of field effect flat panel displays. In 2000, he got a permanent position in CEA’s Quantronics group to develop superconducting quantum bits. With his colleagues, he demonstrated the first Josephson qubit with long coherence time (~ 1µs) and single shot readout: the quantronium. He taught Josephson quantum bit physics at several summer schools on Quantum Information Processing. He now works on making elementary quantum processors and doing atomic physics with artificial Josephson atoms. Recently, the team has observed the first violation of a “Bell’s inequality in time”, and has demonstrated quantum speedup with an electrical quantum processor running the Grover search algorithm on two qubits.
