Master research internship to be followed by a PhD thesis in both univesities Paris-Saclay and Sherbrooke (Canada). The goal is to couple a single electronic spin to a superconducting cavity sufficiently strongly to manipulate and detect the spin, in two different experimental setups.
Sujet détaillé/Full description
The Quantronics group of CEA-Saclay and the Institut quantique of Sherbrooke University collaborate in a fundamental physics project aiming at coupling a single electronic spin to microwave superconducting cavity. Two approaches will be explored: With Professor M. Pioro-Ladrière from the Institut quantique, the spin-cavité will be mediated by the charge degree of freedom of a semiconducting double quantum dot. The inhomogeneous magnetic field created by a micro-magnet close to the double dot allows one to obtain a spin-cavity coupling of a few MHz, and to choose by design between a purely longitudinal or transverse coupling [1]. The parametric modulation of the longitudinal coupling will be used for a non destructive measurement of the spin using the microwave signal leaking from the cavity [2]. In the Quantronics group, the magnetic coupling between the spin of a single impurety in a crystal and a superconducting cavity will be optimized to reach a characteristic coupling frequency above 1 kHz. Such a coupling should be enough to detect a single electronic spin using a homodyne measurment of the field leaking out of the cavity [3], which would bring ESR to the ultimate sensibility. We thus recruit a Master research intern willing to pursue the internship by a PhD thesis in 2018 in two laboratories located at CEA University Paris-Saclay (18 months) and at Sherbrooke University (18 months).
The intern applicant having a solid background in quantum physics will participate to the ongoing research: design of microwave resonators for coupling to a spin, fabrication and test of these resonators, or ultra-low temperature measurement of hybrid circuits.
The intership is planned at CEA-Saclay, but could also possibly be at the Institut quantique from Sherbrooke if the intern prefers it.
