Outstanding Student Poster (OSP) Awards 2014 to : Davide Faranda

Nonlinear Processes in Geosciences,

The 2014 Outstanding Student Poster (OSP) Awards is awarded to Davide Faranda for the poster entitled: "A recurrence-based technique for detecting genuine extremes in instrumental temperature records (Faranda, D.; Vaienti, S.)".  Click here to download the poster as PDF-file.

Resumé: I am actually post-doctoral researcher at the Service de Physique de l’Etat Condensé (SPEC), Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), Saclay Paris. I work with B. Dubrulle on several projects devoted to give a statistical description of turbulent flows. The poster I presented at EGU 2014 is the result of the research line on extreme events I started during my PhD program at Hamburg University under the supervision of V. Lucarini. In this work, together with S. Vaienti from the Centre de Physique Theorique in Marseille, we propose the application of new techniques based on the extreme value theory for dynamical systems to temperature data series. The main result is the effective discrimination of normal variability and rare events with respect to a given time-scale, fixed as a parameter. My future research projects include the extension of this technique to the study of weather analogues.
