Bottom-Up Synthesis and Physical Properties Characterization of Graphene Nanoparticles , Nanoribbons and Nanomeshes

Graphene is of great scientific interest since its first isolation in 2004 by Geim and Novoselov. Indeed, its unique electronic, optical and mechanical properties make this material very promising for several applications. However, as graphene is a zero-band gap conductor and in order to expand the range of application, it is necessary to transform the latest into semi-conductor. The band gap can be opened by quantum confinement, by means of the obtention of nano-objects with a precise control of the topology, edge-effects...The bottom-up approach presented in this PhD project allows scientists to control with an atomic precision the molecular structures of these nano-objects which in turn allow to control of the electronic and optical properties of the synthetic material.  Such project consists in the surface assisted and solution mediated syntheses of controlled architectures of nitrogen dopped graphene namely graphene nanomeshes GNM, graphene nanoribbons GNR and graphene like nanoparticles for electric and/or optical applications. Thus, our work is focusing on the developpement of original porphyrins with PAH moities in which will be used as building blocks.
