The technique is also widely used in chemistry, biology and the study of materials. A new method, recently developed and based on MRI, explores the local surface magnetization of an object. Applicable to the study of electrochemical processes, the method can be used to improve electricity storage devices for mobile equipments.

Spin-orbit coupling offers many possibilities for converting spin signals into charge ones and vice versa. In particular, charge currents may be generated by pure spin injection via the spin galvanic effect -- the conversion of a non-equilibrium spin accumulation into a charge current. In certain settings, and notably in a novel generation of oxide-based experimental setups, spin injection takes place through an inversion symmetry-broken tunnel junction.

Neutral modes of the fractional quantum Hall effect have been shown to exchange energy with their fractionally charged counterparts, but it remains unknown whether they do so with the nearby integer quantum Hall edge channels. Researchers of the Nanolectronics group of SPEC, in collaboration with teams of the C2N (Palaiseau, France) and NIMS (Tsukuba, Japan) have performed a heat transport experiment in graphene answering this question.
