Development of aligned CNTs controlled growth (density, diameter ...) by CVD on metal supports for the development of supercapacitor electrodes. Elaboration of 100% CNT flexible fibres.

The aerosol-assisted CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) method leads to obtain dense arrays of aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs), whose applications are promising, in particular in the field of supercapacitor electrodes for electrochemical storage of energy, [1-2] alone or in association with active materials: conductive polymers and/or metal oxides (collaboration Universities of Cergy (LPPI), and Tours (PCM2E)). To this end, we will seek to develop the controlled growth of aligned CNTs on supports of interest for the elaboration of supercapacitors electrodes, which requires a lowering of the growth temperature of aligned CNTs to a temperature below 650°C. Therefore, the objective of the project is to control the synthesis of aligned CNT carpets on metal supports (Al) and will consist in adjusting the synthesis parameters (temperature, gas, nature of the precursors or the support ...) in order to control the characteristics of the CNTs (alignment, length, etc.). Particular attention will be focus on the diameter and density control of nanotubes, with for instance the introduction of nitrogen into the structure of the aligned nanotubes. On the other hand, with the emergence of supercapacitors in the form of flexible fibres, the use of 100% NTC fibres produced by direct dry-spinning of aligned CNT carpets synthesized by aerosol CVD [3] seems promising. The evaluation of this approach will therefore be at the center of the second part of the project.
