Abstract:

My HDR presentation will highlight several aspects of my research. The first part will concentrate on how we measured the size of the process zone ahead of a slowly moving crack in glasses. The second part will concentrate on how changing the chemical composition leads to variations in the structure, physical, mechanical and stress corrosion cracking properties of pristine and irradiated SiO2-B2O3-Na2O glasses. Pristine studies showed that: (i) the Na2O concentration controls the onset of stress corrosion cracking and (ii) the depolymerization of the glass increases the glass's susceptibly to stress corrosion cracking. Studies of electron irradiated glasses suggest a way to delay the onset of stress corrosion cracking and decrease the susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking. The last section of my presentation will present my current and future works concerning porous glasses.
