Mach Zehnder interferometry and coherent manipulation of the valley in graphene

Abstract:

Quantum optics electronics, i.e. the realisation of the electronic analogue of quantum optics experiments, offers interesting perspectives for quantum computing. One of the challenges is the realisation with electronic states, of quantum bits stable enough to perform complex quantum computations. Experiments conducted so far in heterostructures of GaAs/AlGaAs have shown the possibility of encoding information in the charge or spin of an electron, but the vulnerability of these states makes their use difficult. In 2005, the discovery of an innovative material, graphene, opened new perspectives with, in addition to the spin, the existence of a new degree of freedom to encode information: the valley.

This thesis work focuses on the coherent manipulation of the valley polarization of a superimposed electronic state, the objective being to cover, in a controlled manner, the whole Bloch sphere. To do this, a PN junction, formed in a sample of graphene encapsulated in boron nitride, was studied in the quantum Hall regime. An electrostatic control of the valley polarization of the electronic state propagating along the junction was obtained thanks to local grids placed at both ends of the junction. The coherence of the valley polarized electronic state was then studied by Mach Zehnder interferometry, as well as its evolution with different parameters: the temperature of the system, the intensity of the current flowing through the junction, and the length of the junction. Finally, using a Mach Zehnder interferometer as a quantum probe, one of the possible mechanisms inducing decoherence is explored: spin waves propagating when the graphene core is ferromagnetic.
