On explore d’abord  l'effet dynamo.

Abstract:

This "Habilitation à diriger les recherches- HDR" thesis deals with the study of different dissipative out--of--equilibrium systems, mainly the turbulent flows and granular matter.

A first chapter reports the role of fluctuations in out-of-equilibrium systems. First we summarize our works on the action of multiplicative noise on various instabilities. In the next section we compute the fluctuations of the power injected by a random forcing in a dissipative system. Several systems are reviewed and compared to our prediction. After, we test some new constrains imposed by the stationarity on the fluctuations of the rate of energy transfer, the injected and dissipated power in a turbulent numerical model. The last section outlines our works about the statistical properties of energy balance in granular gas.

The chapter 3 is devoted to the transitions in granular matter. First, we summarize a study of ordering transitions and of the segregation in a granular mixture driven by the horizontal swirling motion. A horizontal vibration was also used to probe rheological transitions in a set of grains. Then, several studies of grains under a centrifugal compression are gathered. The last section reports energetic considerations used to predict phase transitions in a monolayer of vibrated grains.

The chapter 4 focuses on Magnetohydrodynamics. The first section is devoted to the high magnetic Reynolds number flows and the dynamo effect. The others sections are devoted to low Reynolds numbers experiments. The first one deals with the effect of horizontal magnetic field on the efficiency of turbulent convective transport. Then we present an experiment on instability in a electromagnetically driven flow in the Taylor-Couette geometry. Finally we summarize the PhD thesis of Pablo Gutierrez on the free surface turbulence in an electromagnetically driven flow.

Finally, the last chapter describes two additional research projects that we would like to realize.
