Philippe HERING tunes the steering mirror in order to align the laser beam into the ultra-high vacuum chamber housing the ion time-of-flight spectrometer. A focusing mirror housed inside the vacuum chamber allows one to reach laser intensities in the 1014-1016 Wcm-2 range.
