Recent advances of FEL technologies and sciences, which make atomic and electronic motion in reaction visible, will be reviewed. A focus will be given to the use of phase-controlled biharmonic pulses, produced at FERMI, a fully coherent seeded FEL in Italy, for controlling photoelectron emission and single-photon-enabled Auger decay and for the measurement of Wigner time delay in atomic photoionization.
